July 22nd In Melodymaker , Caroline Coon featured a short piece about the Clash , one of their first mentions in the music papers. Caroline asks Joe Strummer if the Clash are into reggae to which he replies 'Well there's not much else about is there?' This week 'Police and Thieves' by Junior Murvin was high in the UK reggae charts, a track covered by the Clash from early days.

July 27th The Stranglers play a free gig at the Nashville Rooms

August The second issue of Sniffin Glue features Eddie and the Hotrods and an enthusiastic piece about the Damned as well as some news from New York about the Heartbreakers and the Brats

August 10th The Pistols play at the 100 Club in London.

August 12th In Manchester, the Buzzcocks promote and play their second gig at the Ranch on Dale Street. This is a tiny basement club next door to Foo Foo Lamarr's drag and cabaret club. Foo Foo has several tough bouncers working for him who stop the Buzzcocks from playing because the music is disturbing punters next door in for a drag act. The Ranch was a popular club on the gay scene and due to this more tolerant crowd became home to Manchester's early punk scene. Some people remember that there was often a heavy presence from local gangsters which created some tension however.

August 14th The Pistols play Barbarellas in Birmingham . A reasonable quality bootleg of this gig is in existence but I don't think it has ever been commercially reissued.
