January 1st The Roxy heralds the new year with a gig headlined by the Clash including Joe Strummer wearing his now famous 1977 shirt. Support was from the new line up of Chelsea with Gene October singing.Generally the feeling was that the punk movement was ready to take on the establishment in the new year. This opinion was strengthened by the input from reggae bands like Culture whose 'Two Sevens Clash' track claimed to prophesise big changes in society. McLaren and Westwoods shop was also refitted and Sex was transformed into its most famous incarnation, Seditionaries . As Malcolm was now working exclusively with the Pistols, Vivienne Westwood was left to design new clothing and run the shop throughout it's most infamous period.

January 3rd The Damned play the first of a series of monday night gigs at the Roxy as a deal with Andy Czezowski to pay him some of the money owed from the period when he managed them.

January 4th In Manchester Howard Devoto and Richard Boon approach friends and family to borrow the money to press their first record. The 4 track EP recorded the week before and produced by Martin Hannett was to be self financed and pressed in an edition of only 1000. Pete Shelley's dad starts the ball rolling with £250.
In London the Sex Pistols are followed by bad press as they travel to Heathrow Airport to fly out to Holland to play three dates. The press report spitting, swearing and vomiting. A KLM rep was reported as saying that they were the most revolting people she had ever seen.

January 5th The Sex Pistols play their first date at the Paradiso club in Amsterdam. a good quality bootleg of this gig exists which features all the songs which were to remain in the Pistols set until they split.

January 6th The second date in Holland is at the Art Centre in Rotterdam

January 7th Buzzcocks have got enough money for their EP and become the first band to form their own label 'New Hormones' and so point the way for many of the bands in process of forming. For the record cover they have their photo taken in Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester with a polaroid camera.
The Sex Pistols play their last gig with Glen Matlock on bass at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. Many people think that this was one of the best gigs they played. Again a bootleg exists of this gig.
